bio
Eric Wrubel is the Immediate Past-President of the New York Chapter of the American Academy of Matrimonial Lawyers (AAML). He is a partner at Schwart Sladkus Reich Greenberg & Atlas, LLP. He has been practicing law for nearly thirty years in the areas of family and matrimonial law with a particular interest in family law issues for LGBTQ individuals. Mr. Wrubel has significant experience in handling divorces for ultra high net worth clients with nine-figure estates. Mr. Wrubel is also a Fellow of the International Academy of Family Lawyers.
Mr. Wrubel is recognized as a leader in the re-definition of family in New York when his groundbreaking win in the New York Court of Appeals’ case of In the Matter of Brooke S.B. v. Elizabeth A.C.C. expanded the definition of “parent” to include same-sex couples. The Brooke decision led to New York Appellate Courts then applying for the first time the presumption of legitimacy to children born during same-sex marriage. Wrubel has been at the forefront of same-gender marriage and divorce issues and lectures frequently on issues of parentage as well as tri-parenting. Wrubel is consulted routinely regarding embryo disputes (with the leading case in New York on the return of children to their biological parents) and the impact of US Supreme Court decisions on family formation.
Mr. Wrubel was one of three finalists to receive the 2017 Attorney of the Year Award from the New York Law Journal and he has been listed in Best Lawyers in America since 2010. Mr. Wrubel lectures frequently and has written numerous articles on issues including child custody, pre-divorce planning, parentage for LGBTQIA+ families and valuation issues. Mr. Wrubel was an adjunct professor at Benjamin N. Cardozo School of Law where he taught a class on the financial aspects of divorce.
